Our board for 2026-2027

Rebecca Anthony

President. Rebecca is a life-long cyclist who has been using her bike as her main mode of transportation since 2013, and has been car-free for over a year. She started biking to work during a “GoByBike Week” and then just kept on pedalling! As a teacher in the Nanaimo area, she has a passion for spreading the benefits of cycling to the youth in our community and desires to get kids cycling on safe streets. Rebecca believes that advocating for separated biking/walking paths is an important piece of that puzzle. She brings her background in union activism to the table, as well as having been a GoByBike leader in schools and workplaces.

Rebecca served as a director at large during the 2025-2026 term. She was reelected for the 2026-2027 term.

Charlotte Cavalié

Vice President. Charlotte Cavalié pedaled into Nanaimo in 2024, all the way from France (well, not literally). Growing up in a country known for baguettes and epic bike races, she got around by walking, cycling, and carpooling—mostly out of necessity. Along the way, she developed a strong appreciation for practical, people-friendly transit. These days, while she could afford a car, she’d rather spend that money on travel. A firm believer in giving people real transportation choices, Charlotte is excited to see Nanaimo embracing bike-share and scooter-share options—and sees big potential to expand them, especially for those who can’t drive, like teenagers, seniors, or people on medications that make driving unsafe. With a background in communications, journalism, and public relations, she brings her media skills to the Board of Directors to build stronger public connections and advocate for more sidewalks, bike lanes, and safer streets across Vancouver Island.

Charlotte serve a portion of the 2025-2026 term as a director at large before becoming vice president. she was reelected for the 2026-2027 term.

Danny Hall

Secretary. Danny Hall may have grown up in Alberta, but it was during his summers on Vancouver Island where he learned to cycle. During his time in university and living in Victoria where he lived largely car free, it changed his perspective on the forms of infrastructure that should be prioritized for a good community. This perspective was strengthened and was clarified through exposure to other communities through travel and the growing online pushback to our car-centric society.

Today Danny lives between Parksville and Qualicum and rides his bike to both communities for his work as a substitute teacher. This experience has inspired him to champion cohesive, safe, and useful cycling infrastructure network across the Regional Distract of Nanaimo (RDN). This goal is also why he has worked/is working with Strong Towns Nanaimo to advocate for this and other related goals that make the RDN a better place to live.

Danny previously served as a director at large for the 2025-2026 term, and was reelected for the 2026-2027 term. He was reelected for the 2026-2027 term.

Jesse Woodward

Treasurer. Jesse is a life long cyclist and resident of Nanaimo for 20+ years. Having attended Vancouver Island University, he works in community media and graphic design today. He brings his broad experience in non-profit organizing to the Nanaimo Area Cycling Coalition and looks forward to improving safe infrastructure for cyclists and other vulnerable road users in Nanaimo and surrounding communities.

Jesse is a founding member serving as secretary-treasurer of the founding board, and served as secretary, and later again secretary-treasurer during the 2025-2026 term. He was reelected for the 2026-2027 term.

Alex Stanciu

Director at Large. Alex is a 24-year-old event organizer and DJ based in Nanaimo. A graduate of Vancouver Island University, he holds both a Tourism Management degree and an Event Management diploma. His passion for events and community-building began at a young age, fueling the drive to create memorable experiences for diverse audiences. As the founder of Astro Events, Alex merges entertainment, advocacy, and collaboration through projects like GoByBike and creative local festivals such as the Bicycle Film Festival. His boundless energy, coupled with a commitment to innovation, helps businesses and nonprofits flourish by delivering dynamic, community-focused events that bring people together.

Alex is a founding member serving as vice president of the founding board, and served as a director at large during the 2025-2026 term. He was reelected for the 2026-2027 term.

Peter Stary

Director at Large. Peter Stary spent 37 years with the City of Vancouver as a Transportation Specialist, where he served as their Bicycle Program Coordinator for 18 years before retiring in 2015. He has also served as a director with the BC Cycling Coalition. Today he is retired and resides in Qualicum Beach.

Peter previously served for the 2025-2026 term. He was reelected for the 2026-2027 term.

Phil Hall

Director at Large. Phil Hall delivered prescriptions for a pharmacy by bike as a 15-year-old and has never stopped riding to work, school, shops, and just for fun, since then. During his 40 years of year round commuting in Vancouver, he was a member of the Downtown Cycling Network, VACC/Hub Cycling, and helped organize the staff cycling group at Vancouver Public Library. Since retiring and moving to Nanaimo four years ago, he has been riding for transport and recreation on both e-bikes and regular bikes. Phil advocates for roads, networks, and connections that make it an easy and satisfying experience for anyone who decides they want to ride to where they wish to go.
